upstate new york. we showed you this story unfolding yesterday. firefighters were shot at responding to a house fire. the person who owns the home, william spengler, police say actually set his own home on fire and then laid and wait for the first responders to get there and started shooting at hem. sean carroll says this is not spengler's first encounter with police. >> reporter: during the chaotic scene, the first webster police officer to arrived managed to exchange fire with spengler who laid in wait. >> we assumed he was shooting at a high ground advantage near a berm near the home where he had barricaded or set himself up with weapons to shoot at the innocent responders. and i will say that one of the first webster police officers to respond did engage the shooter and probably in all likelihood saved many lives. >> reporter: spengler's criminal past dates back to the 1980s. >> she was found dead by her grandson who lived next door. &rpengler discovered the body at 12:45 p.m.. police say mrs. spen
